Mr. Walter Joseph Jackson Jr.

Walter Joseph Jackson, Jr. (Walt or Junior, as friends and family called him) was the third of five siblings, born to the late Bishop Walter J. Jackson, Sr., and  Roxie Anna Mashack Jackson. Born into a faith filled family with a father ministering two churches, his young life was spent learning service to people and to God by watching the good works of his parents. When the family, after numerous relocations, finally settled in Hurst, TX, Walt joined Corinth Missionary Baptist Church under the guidance of Pastor L. B. Adams, serving as a Deacon, Trustee, and a member of both the Men’s Choir and the Men’s Auxiliary.

Walt met the love of his life in high school, Linda Diane Duncan, and they were married for 53 years before she departed this earth, but not his heart, in 2021. To their union two children were born Walter (Kristie) Jackson, III of Hurst, TX and Monica Renaye Johnson of Raleigh, NC. Walt was a devoted father and grandfather, and in his retirement enjoyed spoiling four grandchildren: Stevie Garza and Brandon Jackson of Hurst, TX; and Telifero and Adaniah Johnson of Raleigh, NC.

Walt was a graduate of Atkins Senior High Class of 1968. He furthered his education studying at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), while earning an associate degree in computer technology from Lear Seigler, an early computer terminal manufacturer. Taking this knowledge while continuing to learn independently, Walt started his professional life working at the Washington Post. Returning to Winston-Salem with his young family, he used his computer knowledge with the water billing department for the City of Winston-Salem, then RJ Reynolds.

While attending a conference in Houston in 1979, a stranger overheard him discussing his job and asked him to stay another day to interview for a job. Showcasing his winning smile and boundless self-confidence, Walt agreed, and opened the door to the most amazing journey he could have imagined for himself and his family. Walt moved first Linda, then the kids to Houston to join Superior Oil (later purchased by Mobil Oil), managing IT programs for 13 years in offices in Houston, New Orleans, New York, and Dallas. In 1992, he departed Mobil Oil and founded Competitive Information Technologies, an IT consulting firm, alongside Linda. While continuing his private consulting, Walt returned to corporate America to work at Bank of America, then MBNA, from which he retired.

In his leisure time, Walt enjoyed photography, golfing, and gardening. In each home he had, Walt kept an immaculately manicured lawn with beds filled with flowering plants and roses. With a boundless thirst for knowledge, Walt was also an avid reader and follower of the news. Walt also enjoyed vacationing and spent many years post-retirement travelling with Linda to beaches around the country, and touring Alaska, the Caribbean and Canada. For their 50th anniversary in 2018, Linda and Walt renewed their vows, celebrating with their children and grandchildren on Kailua-Kona beach in Hawaii. His last great adventure was taken with his daughter and granddaughter touring Europe from Italy to France.

Greeting Walt at the pearly gates is Linda; his father and mother, Bishop Walter and Roxieanna Jackson, Sr.; his father- and mother-in-law James and Maggie Duncan; sister Edna Jackson; brother Lewis Jackson, Sr.; sisters-in-law Lou Ollie Wilson and Genora Ross; brothers-in-law Wilbert Joyner, Sr., and Charles and David Duncan. He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory two sisters, Doris Joyner of Winston-Salem and Vickie Kyle (Johnny) of Laurel, MD; four sisters-in-law Marlene Jackson, Alberta Duncan and Daisy Foster of Winston-Salem, NC, and Mary Anne Hubbard of Upper Marlboro, MD; two brothers-in-law, James Duncan, Jr., of Winston-Salem, NC; and John Duncan (Norma) of Mitchellville, MD; and thirty-two nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service, 1 PM, Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Delta Arts Center, 2611 New Walkertown Rd, Winston-Salem.

The family will receive friends at 6607 Academic Avenue, Raleigh.
